Fundraising Tips Straight from the Top

Fundraising is a vital part of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® that sometimes involves a whirlwind of emotions. It can be daunting to set goals, determine how to start, what methods to use, or even who to ask. To help you out, we’ve teamed up with some of our Top Fundraisers from 2023 to share all the wisdom that’s boosted them straight to the top of the leaderboards. From simple emails to elaborate golf outings, these trailblazers share the methods that have propelled them to the summit of fundraising excellence. They’ll spill the beans on what works best for them and reveal their tips and tricks to help you achieve your fundraising goals this year. 

Laura P.: Top Fundraiser ? New England: $50,000+ 

For the past three years, Laura has been walking the Komen 3-Day in honor of her mom and best friend who have both battled breast cancer. Determined to prevent herself and her nieces from having to combat this tremendous disease, she takes fundraising very seriously. She raises most of her money through word of mouth, Facebook, and email, including updating the signature on her work email to include the link to her fundraising page. Laura acknowledges that fundraising can seem formidable, but notes that, from her experience, many people want to donate, especially when someone they know is doing something big like the 3-Day®.  

“Tell everyone what you are doing, don’t be shy. When I send out the email, I include all the people who previously donated, all my friends, some co-workers, and I have included my parents’ friends too. I have been amazed at how many people have been touched by breast cancer or support me due to my mother.” Laura also emphasizes the value of reminder emails and asking people about their company’s matching gift policy. Her brother’s company does a double match one day a year, so he always donates on that day, and a friend of hers works at a company that always does a double match. “It is amazing when you can turn a $50 donation into $150 or $100 into $300.” 

She also emphasizes the importance of sending out thank you notes to everyone who donated. After the walk, she sends a card with pictures from the walk as a wonderful way of including her donors in the Pink Bubble. Laura looks forward to walking again in the 2024 Denver 3-Day as a 1-Day walker. “Breast cancer has had such a negative impact on my life, but Susan G. Komen® has had such a positive impact. I feel as if I can make a difference, because of Komen.” 

Cynthia S.: Top Fundraiser – Chicago: $36,000+ 

As a breast cancer survivor and first-time walker, Cynthia kicked off her 3-Day journey with a goal of raising $10,000 to help find the cures for breast cancer. However, her fundraising efforts took her to unexpected levels as she and her two daughters collectively raised $43,000. Her approach included sending letters, emails and text messages to friends, family, and business acquaintances. She happily shared her story and explained the 3-Day to anyone who asked for more information on the cause. Upon receiving donations, Cynthia sent out a handwritten thank you letter to each donor to let them know how much she appreciated their support in continuing the fight to end breast cancer. Whenever she hit a milestone or was close to achieving a goal, Cynthia’s husband encouraged her to push further and reach out to more acquaintances who she had not initially contacted. In fact, Cynthia and her husband increased her goal 4 or 5 times before settling at $36,000.  

Prior to this effort, Cynthia had never fundraised for any organization. In fact, at the start she was shy about asking friends and family for donations. “I found that sending emails and text messages after I verbally let people know I was walking 60 miles over three days to raise money for [the cures] kind of opened the door for them to give. It was an amazing and uplifting experience to receive daily notifications from the 3-Day that a donation had been made and that alone made me want to reach out to even more potential donors! The realization that people were so happy to help made me even more excited about reaching my goals and beyond. Trust me, if I can do this anyone can! Taking the first step to commit is all it takes. From there the adrenaline will propel you to your fundraising goals, as well as to the finish line!” 

Stephanie C.: Top Fundraiser San Diego – $64,000+ 

Stephanie first participated in the 3-Day in 2006 in Philadelphia with the attitude “Try something once. If you don’t like it, you never have to do it again.” Fifteen events later, she continues to show up to the 3-Day and raise funds as people she is close to continue to go through cancer treatment. “This disease touches so many people and many are silent about it. Being open about raising money for the cause and committing to the walk are ways you can help others talk about and participate in helping others in the journey to recovery,” she shared.  

Year after year, Stephanie puts on a golf outing to raise money for the 3-Day, and each year it grows. She has many repeat supporters whom she sets out to make feel important before, during and after the event. She describes her donors as the backbone of the 3-Day, the true heroes who make it all possible. Her advice to first-time walkers is to start fundraising as soon as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for donations. “It’s not about the big donations,” she shared, “it is about all the small ones. Use your networks ? tap into your friends to tap into their friends.” She also recommends creating a revenue stream that gives something back to the donor, like her annual golf outing.  

She looks forward to walking again in the 2024 Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day with her friends, including a survivor she met in 2021, and her sister who has joined her in walking the past few years. She sets out to match or exceed the amount she raised in 2023. In closing, she advises “It takes a village! Whether you are a top fundraiser or working hard to hit your minimum requirement ? it takes all of us to provide Komen the opportunity to put our money to good work.” 

My 3-Day Experience: Checking in with Former AVON 39 Walker, Debbie

This year on the 3-Day, we were happy and honored to welcome many past AVON 39 walkers to our pink family. One of those walkers, Debbie S., joined the 2018 San Diego 3-Day and was our Top individual Fundraiser for the event! After raising more than $75,000 as a six-time AVON 39 walker, she raised $32,000 in her first year on the 3-Day.

We were so honored to have this breast cancer survivor and grandmother of two on the 3-Day this year. After her first 60-mile walk, she’s giving us an inside peek at her journey, and her top fundraising tips!

You are a fundraising rock star! What are your favorite fundraising techniques?

I fundraise very simply, yet diligently. I start about six months ahead of the walk. I create a personal email message, which I also used on my participant center page. I include a picture of myself to keep it personal. I sent the email to every email address I have in my contacts, everyone that has ever emailed me, everyone I know, lots of people I do not know; friends, family, friends of friends and family, doctors, work contacts, clients etc. Hundreds of emails!

The first round of emails always gets a good amount of donations and keeps me going. For the next 3-4 months I send out monthly emails to those who have not yet donated. I change the email message up each time, but still keep it very personal. I continue to send my original email to ‘new’ email contacts I have gathered along the way. I ask everyone for their email and ask friends and family to share their email lists.

By September I was sending emails to those remaining donors every other week. Come October I was sending emails every week and took advantage of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sometimes I was just sending a picture or a saying or a cartoon and my link to my donation page. It was my goal to stay in their face every time they went to their emails. I figured, the worst thing that could happen is they would just delete or block me! ? No harm! Many thanked me for reminding them, because with all the emails we get, they do get lost and forgotten. I sent emails every week, all the way up until the day of the walk.

I immediately sent every donor a personal thank you email. Also, every once in a while I would update those who already donated on my progress, showing them how much they were a part of raising so much money, which would occasionally make them donate again! I stressed US, and WE, not just me! I showed them what a big part of finding a cure and reaching a goal they were. The fundraising is so fun to me and gives me a great sense of accomplishment! I would wake up every morning and check email immediately to see my donations. The more I got, the more I wanted! I would raise my personal goal accordingly.

I didn’t do anything big or unusual, but I just never stopped asking!

What about training for your 60-mile walk?

As for training, I am a walker by nature. I walk year-round. I started walking diligently 13 years ago, after my cancer diagnosis. It was my escape. I have not stopped walking since. I walk an average of 30 miles a week!

You were also a part of our Opening Ceremony….

The Opening Ceremony was great! Being a part of it was so amazing and special. It was the right length of time and got everyone motivated to get out there and do this! I appreciated the time taken the day before for rehearsal and the time put into making it great!

What were some of your favorite spots along the route?

The route was beautiful! After very chilly mornings, the weather was spectacular, and the views were magnificent. Day 1 had gorgeous ocean views, but every day was beautiful. Having walked in 6 AVON 39 walks in different cities, I must say San Diego blew me away. I have never walked in a city with so much neighborhood support! It was amazing! The crew and residents and businesses were out everywhere! It was a wonderful feeling of love and support, from survivors and women going through treatment thanking us to kids and elderly showing their love!

As a survivor I couldn’t feel more support and love. The crew along the way was great! On Day 1, as it heated up, I took off my long-sleeved shirt. As I was attempting to tie it around my waist, a woman came right over to me and offered to bring it to camp for me. She put it in a bag, wrote my name and phone number on it and delivered it to camp! It seems silly, but so great to not have to walk with a shirt wrapped around you for 20 miles! She even called me later that night to make sure I got it! That’s just how people were! So sweet!

What was it like crossing the finish line?

Crossing the finish line was super special. My son walked the last day with me as a 20-mile walker! I can’t tell you how special that was! We had a great time and as we approached the finish line, my 6-year old granddaughter made a mad dash for me across the field. I picked her up, carried her and the three of us crossed the finish line together! My son said he would love to do it again, maybe all 60 miles, and my granddaughter said she would walk with me in 10 years, when she’s 16! ?

It looks like we have a future 3-Dayer on our hands! Thank you to Debbie, and all our former AVON 39 walkers who made this 3-Day season something truly special!

Please join us in congratulating our 2018 San Diego Milestone Award Winner; Sue Cloonan! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® Milestone Award is given at each event to a walker or crew member who has an outstanding history of participation in the Komen 3-Day. At the San Diego 3-Day camp show, we presented Sue with this special honor.

Our coaching team was so excited to present this award to Sue, who has maintained a position as a top 10 fundraiser for many years as part of her team, Walking and Wine-ing. She is such an important and beloved part of our 3-Day community, and has raised $153,349 over the course of her 10 events!

Her Aunt Patty says that Sue “is a family oriented person who puts herself out over and over again to help family and friends. A wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, niece and friend – we are so lucky to have her in our family. She inspires me and others by her example.”

We then talked to Sue herself, who gave us an inside peak into her love for the 3-Day…

What was your inspiration to do your first 3-Day??

All the people that I’ve met at the golf course where I worked to help find a cure. So many people affected by cancer.

What has brought you back to the 3-Day year after year?

The 3 day is the way the world should be!!!! Everyone supporting everyone!

What is the secret to your 3-Day fundraising success?

An amazing support from my customers, vendors and associates! All donating and supporting for the cause. My event became the event of the year. The spirit, dedication: all for a cause

What is your best advice to anyone walking the 3-Day?

Commit to 2 walks . The first one is amazing and then it becomes more amazing every year.

What’s a fun fact about you? 

I love to give hugs and listen to people!!! And I love wine (red especially)

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned on the 3-Day?  

ENJOY Every moment! All the supporters, walkers, volunteers.
