Congratulations to the Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day Top Fundraisers!

It was a chilly start to Day 1 of the Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day this morning, but soon the sun was shining and guiding the way for the amazing walkers and crew across 20 beautiful miles. The camp show welcoming everyone home included powerful speeches, incredible live entertainment, and some well earned recognition for the top fundraisers.

Huge thanks and congratulations go to Amy K., the top individual fundraiser for the Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day. Amy, who is walking for just the second time ever, raised an astonishing $19,170, making her total over two years $36,868. In addition to being a superstar fundraiser, Amy is also the captain of Save the Boobies, and was a literal superstar on her college basketball team, where as a freshman, she set the record in the Southern Conference for blocked shots. That’s what we call the height of impressiveness!

With 93 members, Dallas/Fort Worth’s biggest team in 2014 is also the team that raised the most money of any team: Boxing Babes Round 8. This year, their 8th with the Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day, they brought in a total of $157,073. Earlier this year, Boxing Babes Round 8 surpassed the $1 million for fundraising total as a team during their 8 year history, and they ended up with a lifetime total of $1,064,991. Wow! Team captain Bernadette S. was on hand for her team’s recognition,

Rebecca R. raised more money than any other crew member this year, with a remarkable $4,285 raised. This Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day, where Rebecca is part of the Gear & Tent crew team, is her 10th event in 10 years, during which time, Rebecca has raise a total of $25,855. When she’s not schlepping people’s luggage around, Rebecca loves to dance, work out, and be her husband’s ranch hand. Not many people know she has a ranch where she feeds animals, hauls hay, clears limbs and more!

Our sincerest thanks go out to all of these extraordinary fundraisers, and every dedicated fundraiser on the Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day.

Pink Soles in Motion – A Real Heart of Service

Jackie B. from Coppell, TX, knows that her story is not all that different from so many Susan G. Komen 3-Day® participants’ stories. Her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2005. A few months after the diagnosis, Jackie heard a commercial on the radio for the Komen 3-Day, and something clicked. For Jackie, part of it was the inspiration she felt from seeing her mom’s strength through her treatments, and part of it was the sobering the realization that now, breast cancer was part of her history too. She called her sister and said, “We’re going to do the 3-Day® in honor of Mom.”

They registered and called their team Pink Soles in Motion. That first year, it was just Jackie and her sister, but flash forward 9 years, to the 2014 Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day, and you’ll see a Pink Soles in Motion team with nearly 100 team members—including walkers, crew members, even Youth Corps members. They are the second largest team on the Dallas/Fort Worth event. That’s what I call motion.

“What’s cool is, every year, you get a few that stay, then you get this new group, then you get some more,” Jackie said. “It’s been a wonderful ride for 9 years, and we don’t see ourselves stopping anytime soon.”

The strength and leadership within the ranks of the Pink Soles in Motion is clear, to the point that Jackie was able to “retire” as captain a few years ago. “We’ve got such strong people on this team, so we switched stuff around,” she says with a smile, and adds, “My second year, I was the only training walk leader on the team. I did every training walk, even the ones on Tuesdays and Thursdays! This year, we must have had 10 training walk leaders.”

After nearly a decade of such active involvement in the 3-Day world, I asked Jackie if anything still surprises her when she comes out to event. “I think it’s always, every year, you go along throughout the year, and then when you come together as a group, and you come to the Opening Ceremony and you’re reminded, ‘Oh, this is why we do this. This is what we’re all about.’ You hear the stories from the Ceremony this morning, briefly, for a few seconds, and you’re reminded.”

It’s that reminder that brings so many people back to the 3-Day year after year: the reality that, though progress is being made, we’re not there yet. Jackie agrees. “Every year we hear of someone else who succumbs to breast cancer, and we say, ‘That’s why we’re still out here.’ And people who have been involved with our team, then all of a sudden, they’re a survivor.” Pink Soles In Motion has nearly a dozen survivors within its ranks, several of whom sat nearby while I talked to Jackie at the Day 1 lunch stop, proudly wearing their Survivor tattoos on their cheeks.

For as strong a presence as the Pink Soles are on the Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day, they’re far from exclusive. “One of our favorite things to do—because we’re a big team, so we don’t all walk together as a group—is meet new folks. We have met so many people just in the first ten miles today. We love it. Hearing their stories. Why are they here?” Jackie mentioned a particular fondness for meeting solo walkers and welcoming them to the team. She looks around and wonders how many of the current Pink Soles started out as single walkers who they happened to meet along the way.

We’re briefly interrupted as the Pink Soles around us erupt with enthusiastic “Here’s Amy! She made it!” Another Sole-mate, returning to the fold. She reaches down to give Jackie a hug. “Amy’s been doing this a long time too. For some of us, we only see each other this one time a year. Sometimes, those who live in close proximity get together. But others, like Amy, we see her just for the walk, and we connect, especially at camp in the evenings, catch up.” The Dallas/Fort Worth event is where most of the team comes home to reunite each year, though, in the true spirit of this amazing team, they’ve also sent smaller versions of the team to other 3-Day cities over the years.

For those team members who are local to the DFW area, their impact and influence in the breast cancer cause extends throughout the year, not just for these 3 days. “The support we get from the community is amazing. We’re adopted by the Coppell Fire Department every October. Pink Soles In Motion, for about 6 years, have gotten a proclamation from the city. We have a real appreciation, being recognized like that. This year, the mayor of Coppell said, they see Pink Soles In Motion as the ambassador for the city in the fight against breast cancer.” Jackie is proud of the fact that, as a large team, Pink Soles In Motion is able to hold large fundraising events out in the community, raising tremendous awareness along with money.

Nine years is a long history. I asked Jackie what she loves about the 3-Day and her team. “It changes your life forever. You end up going through all kinds of things. You become a big family. The people on this team have a real heart of service. That’s what you see out here. We learn perseverance, and it carries over into our daily lives. It wasn’t until my mother was diagnosed, and it was right in my face, that I really understood how people become passionate about a cause.”

In the case of Jackie and her Pink Soles In Motion teammates, passionate feels like an understatement.

Introducing the 3-Day Series Walkers – Part 2

Anyone who steps up to the challenge of participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® is making an incredible commitment. The months spent on fundraising strategy and execution, training plans and schedules, prepping, packing and traveling almost make it feel like the Komen 3-Day is your second job (good thing it’s a job you love!).

That’s why it’s especially remarkable when we meet a walker who makes the extraordinary decision to walk in every 3-Day® event in one year. In the past, there have been one or two walkers each year who dedicate themselves to walking the “full series,” but in 2014, we are honored to have eight amazing people taking on the full series and walking in all seven 3-Day events.

Yesterday, you met Nicole H. and Melissa, and today, we meet the two marvelous men who are walking all seven 3-Day events this year. Tomorrow, we’ll introduce you to walkers 5 and 6!

Jim H.

Jim and his dear friend Zoie, who were brought together by fate and the 3-Day

  • What’s your name and where are you from?Jim Hillmann – San Jose, CA
  • What is your 3-Day history (how many events have you walked/crewed?) – I began walking in 2008 and have walked in 28 events so far, with 7 more planned for this year. In 2011, I walked in all 14 events, having walked in 24 events in the last three years.
  • How/why did you first get involved with the 3-Day? – My mom died from breast cancer in 2004 and in 2008, I realized I could continue to think it was unfair that mom had died from breast cancer or get off the sidelines and make a difference in finding a cure through my participation.
  • Are you part of any teams in 2014? – I am walking with Team Tiaras in Dallas.
  • What made you decide to do all 7 events this year? – This is the 10th anniversary of my mom’s death and I am doing it to honor her life and her courage in her fight against breast cancer.
  • What are your go-to fundraising strategies? – Each year I try to add a different fundraiser that will reach a different demographic so I am not always seeking funds from the same people. I also only try fundraisers that I have a passion for as I think this passion translates to one’s passion for finding a cure for breast cancer and helping others. If one is not excited about the fundraiser, many will take that to mean they are also not excited about finding a cure. I also try not to be discouraged if a fundraiser doesn’t do as well as anticipated, but determine the reason it didn’t succeed and make changes or try something else. In short, do not be discouraged but learn from the experience and move forward.
  • What are you looking forward to the most with your walks this year? – I’m looking forward to renewing friendships from the cities I walked in during 2011 and making new friendships with fellow walkers, crew and all our supporters. I’m also looking forward to sharing my story and hearing others as we all walk for a cure.
  • Is there anything that you’re nervous about? – Not really. During my first years walking, there were many unknowns that sometimes cause a few butterflies, but I have learned from many personal experiences that one only has to “lean back” and let the community support you when one has doubt, for it will be there with open arms ready to help.
  • What 3 words would you use to describe the 3-Day? – Life changing experience

William walking in his trademark pink kilt

  • What’s your name and where are you from? – William Kline, live in Seattle, WA, born in Erie, PA
  • What is your 3-Day history (how many events have you walked/crewed?) – I have walked in Seattle for the last 9 years and in 2012 walked Seattle and Tampa.
  • How/why did you first get involved with the 3-Day? – I first got involved because “I can” and did not think I had any direct connection. I soon found out that friends would open up about their connection and thus I was now connected. I have since had many instances of friends, new friends, and family members share their experience.
  • Are you part of any teams in 2014? – No
  • What made you decide to do all 7 events this year? – This being my 10th year, I wanted to stretch my commitment and seven events was a goal I knew I could achieve.
  • What are your go-to fundraising strategies? – Talking with friends and new friends I meet during my training walks. Working with some businesses to display my cards and I held a fundraiser. I currently have raised over $12,000 and I am working to reach the minimum, but won’t stop there. Fundraising will continue until San Diego.
  • What are you looking forward to the most with your walks this year? – Traveling to the events, meeting the walkers, meeting new 3-Day crew members and reconnecting with members I have met over the years, and really looking forward to connecting/meeting with the local volunteers.
  • Is there anything that you’re nervous about? – LOL, losing luggage (which is very rare these days, but it happens)!
  • What 3 words would you use to describe the 3-Day? – Inspired, committed, family

Come back tomorrow and meet two more of the full series 3-Day walkers!
