For the 2018 Susan G. Komen 3-Day® season, we’re pleased to be continuing the Local Impact Award. This award is being given to participants who have been instrumental in strengthening the 3-Day® community throughout the year. Local Impact Award honorees have gone above and beyond in their efforts leading training walks, attending 3-Day community events, supporting the 3-Day staff year-round at meet-ups and workshops, and in general, making a difference by building lasting relationships and showing commitment to the 3-Day in all they do.

Please join us in congratulating the 2018 Philadelphia 3-Day Local Impact Award Winner, Dawn Kifer.

Her friends and family know how much the 3-Day means to Dawn

Jennifer Marandino says,  “As a previous training walk leader I know the commitment it requires. Dawn has tremendously dedicated her time and energy serving as a training walk leader to those in the southern New Jersey area for several years.

As a training walk leader, Dawn makes new and veteran walkers feel welcome, preparing them for the 3-Day, providing sound advice and words of wisdom. I am proud to call Dawn a teammate and dear friend. I can always count on her to be my sounding board, my voice of reason, and my calm among the drama.”

In addition, Laurie Pino raves about Dawn!

“I met Dawn 2 years ago as I was preparing for my first 3-Day walk in Philadelphia. She greeted me with a warm smile and guided me through my first long training walk. Since then, we have worked closely on fundraisers, continue training walks together, share co-captain responsibilities for our team of 12, and most importantly laughs with me throughout it all! She is always available to answer our questions and offer advice. I am truly blessed to have met such a wonderful teammate and friend! She is very deserving of this award!”

With such high praise, we just had to hear from Dawn herself. When she answered these questions, she didn’t know she was going to be our Local Impact winner!

What was your inspiration to do your first 3-Day???

In January of 2011, a friend of mine had said she was going to do the 3-Day, my response was, “Okay, I will too”. My aunt is a survivor, and I had friends and co-workers that were also survivors.

What has brought you back to the 3-Day year after year?

To be perfectly honest, when I signed up that first time, I figured it would be a one and done thing.  Boy was I wrong! When I walked that first year, it became clear that this was a journey that had changed my life. The support I saw from the communities where we walked and the number of people walking certainly had an impact but actually getting to know the people I was walking with and the people I was walking for, made me realize that this is something that I just can’t walk away from.

What is the secret to your 3-Day fundraising success?

Don’t be afraid to ask…People will give from their heart and they will give what they can.  Just remember that no amount is too little.

What is your best advice to anyone walking the 3-Day?

The 3-Day gives us a training schedule to follow. It’s great if you can follow that, but realistically, life happens, so it’s important to train when you can. I would say that it’s important to do at least one big back-to-back weekend (18/13 or 18/15 miles in one weekend) just so you can see how your body will feel. Also be sure to train in what you intend to wear on event (tops, pants/shorts, socks, sneakers, underwear, sports bra, back pack/fanny pack). If you’re not comfortable for 3 miles, 10 miles, 18 miles, you’re definitely not going to be comfortable for  20+ plus miles. Also, be sure to listen to your body. If you feel like you just can’t go on, get on a sweep van. That’s what they’re there for.  Last but not least, be sure to hydrate! This is something that can not be stressed enough. You should have water and some type of drink with electrolytes.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned on the 3-Day?

Breast cancer does not discriminate, it doesn’t care if you old or young, male or female, and it doesn’t care that you’ve already battled it before, it will come after you again and again. We are have to be stronger that it, we have to continue to fight it and stop it. We will continue this journey until we bring an end to breast cancer.

What’s a fun fact about you?

My favorite musical group is the Beatles, and my favorite song is “Let it Be”

My favorite sports teams are the Ohio State Buckeyes, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Cincinnati Bengals.

I learned how to count to 10 in Spanish on Sesame Street and I can say “Thank You” in Polish too.

And I completed a Triathlon Sprint when I turned 50!

2018 Philadelphia Susan G. Komen 3-Day Wrap Up

Over the weekend, hundreds of walkers gathered inside the Grand Ballroom at Hilton Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing ready to take on the fight against breast cancer. The 2018 Philadelphia 3-Day was the first 3-Day to feature a Camp inside of a hotel, and we were so very excited to pilot this intriguing new model for our 3-Day community.

An energetic Opening Ceremony further reminded us why our steps are so very important, and we took off into Philadelphia.

We walked past Independence Hall at 1.2 miles, and then into our first Pit Stop of the 3-Day weekend at mile 3.6, which was themed with bouncing balls. We continued on to Pit Stop 2 at West Fairmount Park, where our walkers stepped into a fairy tale with the Enchanted Pit Stop, complete with 3-Day Dwarves, “Crampy, Blistery, and Achy.”

The smiling faces of our crew at Pit Stop 2 propelled us forward into lunch at Chamounix Field, 9.2 miles into our route. We showed some team spirit with the Eagles theme, and enjoyed resting on our Mohawk pads and stretching before we took off for the final parts of the route.

While a little bit of rain came down, it didn’t dampen our spirits. A quick stop at Boob Street at Rodin Museum Grounds fueled us up for the remaining five miles of the day, and the community came out to cheer us in as we walked back into the Hilton.

The hotel was serving Philadelphia’s pretzels with pink salt, a perfect local treat to get us ready for dinner and a fun camp show where we awarded some of our participants’ amazing fundraising work, and rewarded milestone and impact award winners, Ronald MacDonald and Dawn Kifer. Then, it was off to bed so we could rest in anticipation of a beautiful Day two.

Day two greeted us with ideal weather and no humidity. Walkers tackled the cobble stone streets of the city, and walked past the art museum, where some walkers took a moment to recreate their Rocky moment and run up the stairs.

Next, we walked along the river while teams rowed in regatta races, and then climbed the hills to Belmont Mansion for its incredible views of the skyline. Then it was time for lions, tigers and bears as the route moved through the Philadelphia Zoo before returning back to camp at the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing.

Back at Camp, we relaxed in the zen-inducing Bank of America massage chairs and enjoyed a yummy dinner before an entertaining camp show and our classic 3-Day dance party. On Sunday we headed out to South Philly neighborhoods, with Mile 1 passing by Elfreth’s Alley. Walkers were cheered on by inflatable unicorns and dinosaurs, and we wished we could start every day that way.

We also walked by the dueling Pat and Geno’s Steak Shops at mile 11, with some walkers stopping for a yummy bite to eat. After some classic Philly fare, it was onwards past a cheering station at Marconi Plaza, and then past the Sports Complex (home of the Phillies, Flyers, Sixers and Eagles), being welcomed by the Eagles Drum and Bugle Corps who could be heard from a mile away. We also spotted another dancing unicorn — just the whimsical sight we needed to put some pep in our step as we marched toward Closing Ceremony.

The day ended at the historic Navy Yard under sunny skies, with dragon flies whizzing by, reminding us of loved ones lost checking up on us.

Closing Ceremonies were jam packed with friends and family waiting to celebrate our courageous walkers and crew. Together, we raised $2.1 million toward the fight to end breast cancer. Philadelphia, thank you. We are so honored and grateful for everything you do.

The Philadelphia 3-Day is tomorrow…can you feel the excitement? We are thrilled to welcome all our participants to the City of Brotherly Love! Your coaches, Tisho and Heather, plus your amazing Crew Coordinator Kiki and Event Planner Melanie, have all been counting down the days to this weekend for a whole year. They can’t wait to welcome walkers, crew, volunteers and 3-Day supporters of all kinds to Philadelphia! Before we kick off the weekend though, the whole team is here to share their favorite tips and advice, especially for the new 2018 Philly experience…

One of those is the new 3-Day route, which Melanie thinks the walkers will especially love. It will take our 3-Dayers past favorite spots like the Art Museum and its famous Rocky Statue, as well as historic Elfreth’s Alley. There will also be a lovely walk down Kelly Drive, and through the charming town of Manayunk. Melanie promises lots of fun photo opportunities!

Coach Tisho, a long-time Philly veteran, says she is the most excited that Philly gets to be the one to try out a hotel camp! She looks forward to everyone’s feedback on this new way to celebrate the 3-Day, and thinks it’s going to be amazing!

Aside from the route and the hotel, there is plenty more to be excited about this year…

  • Kiki can’t wait to see the Crew and their smiling faces ? She’s also looking forward to getting out of the office and really dig in on event with her awesome fellow coaches! She says, “the hard-core belly laughs are my best ab workout.”
  • Tisho can’t stop gushing about the hotel! Who wouldn’t love to sleep in comfy hotel beds?! She also thinks walkers will like the new route, and “welcoming AVON39 walkers and Crew to our 3-Day family!”
  • Melanie is pumped for the new route too…and getting to show people new spots in Philadelphia – like the picturesque Strawberry Mansion Bridge and Belmont Plateau. Get your cameras ready!

Coaches Heather and Tisho with a participant (center)

  • But all of them are pumped to welcome Coach Heather to her first Philly 3-Day! She is thrilled for the whole weekend, but especially “to spend an awesome few days with my super cool fellow coaches and soak in the awesomeness that is the Philly 3-Day community!”

As you can see, the love between all the members of the Philadelphia team members is shared across the board. They can’t stop talking about how great each other are! If you don’t already know them, meet them now…

Coach Heather works tirelessly to take good care of her participants, and Coach Kiki promises “you’re in good hands when you have Heather on your side!” She always pumped up and ready to go, inspiring her fellow coaches for all their adventures.

Melanie, in contrast, brings a centered calmness to the group, which Coach Tisho says (with a laugh) that they sometimes desperately need! As a Philly resident, she also works tirelessly to highlight the best in her city.

Tisho is the team’s go-to for all questions. She is also “so passionate about her role with the 3-Day. She brings her compassion, huge heart, and dedication on the daily in hopes that each participant has a great 3-Day experience!” (according to an enthusiastic Coach Heather ?)

And last but not least, Coach Kiki is the joker of the group! Tisho and Heather have plenty of stories of Kiki’s endless laughs…combined with a no-nonsense attitude and dedication to bring her A-game to the 3-Day.

With this team on your side, you know you’re in good hands and are sure to have an amazing weekend in Philadelphia!
