Introducing the 3-Day Step Squad

Earlier this year, we launched the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® Step Squad, a select group dedicated to spreading the word about the Komen 3-Day in their local communities. We were overwhelmed with the number of applicants and want to thank everyone who took the time to apply. It was truly amazing to see such enthusiasm and support for the 3-Day®.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Step Squad is comprised of nearly 100 energetic and passionate participants from throughout the United States who have dedicated their personal time to help us tell the story of why the Komen 3-Day is so amazing. The Step Squad raises awareness of the 3-Day through media interviews, social media, community engagement and word of mouth, educating their local communities about the event and our mission to end breast cancer forever.

Teaming up with the Step Squad and once again serving as our National Spokesperson, we’re happy to share that Dr. Sheri Prentiss will be joining us on-event this year! In her role, Dr. Sheri will be at the forefront of our grassroots efforts, not only serving as a spokesperson for the media, but also as a local ambassador dedicated to educating, recruiting participants and engaging the community about the 3-Day’s mission to eradicate breast cancer forever.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Sheri and the inaugural group of Step Squad members below. We encourage everyone to look for our Step Squad members on-event. You’ll see them in their Step Squad shirts and representing the 3-Day with the media.

Here’s a sneak peek into one of the great media stories secured by Step Squad member, Dena McLauchlin, a seven-city walker, who shared her story with local TV station KTVB in Boise, ID.

My Walking Must Haves

susan g. komen 3-Day breast cancer walk blog dr sheri productsAs the 2015 Susan G. Komen 3-Day® Series draws closer, I hope each of you have been following the suggested training schedule to get you ready for what will be one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences of your life. During my long training walks, I carry all of my essentials that I will use during my 60-mile journey. These are my absolute must haves:

  • Reusable water bottle so that I can hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
  • Sunscreen so that I don’t finish the day the same color as my bright pink shirt.
  • Vaseline® or BodyGlide® to avoid those nasty blisters.
  • 2 pairs of broken in walking or running shoes and an extra pair of socks.
  • Kleenex tissues for my nose during those brisk cool mornings and because, well, I’m a cry baby.
  • Ibuprofen (400 mg every 8 hours as needed) because baby, at the end of 20 miles this nearly 50 year-old body hurts!

While you’re pulling together your “must haves” list keep in mind that the 3-Day can be a time to relax, slow down, take in nature’s beauty, socialize with friends and generally just enjoy being alive. Enjoy the peace of blocking out the world during those moments when you walk alone. Lastly, seize the opportunity to enjoy feeling your body in motion, observe your environment, and to see that the world is much more than the details of your life.

“Hope believes boldly…”

We will all battle hopelessness at some point in our lives. And no matter who we are or what our situation, HOPE is one thing we all need.susan g. komen 3-Day breast cancer walk blog 60 miles sheri prentiss hope

Most people understand hope as wishful thinking, as in “I hope something will happen.” But that is a watered down version of what hope really is. Hope is the “the happy and confident anticipation of good.” When we embrace hope on purpose, it influences our thoughts, our attitudes, our outlook and the way we speak. When you have hope, you speak with authority.

Words are not simply sounds caused by air passing through your larynx. Words have real power. Words can do more than convey information; they can translate a desire into a physical reality. The power of our words can actually restore a broken spirit. I’ve personally witnessed the positive power of hope on the 3-Day, at every event! Like tools, our words can be used to help us reach our goals because the words we speak are actually the overflow of our hearts. And the hearts of our 3-Day family are full of compassion, love and determination.

Hope is not a wait-and-see attitude but an action we must choose to take on purpose each day. It’s the sometimes unexplainable, but always undeniable feeling that today would be a bad day to give up. Never assume that where you’ve been or where you are is as good as it gets. Hope believes boldly, decides daringly, speaks firmly and perseveres passionately. So LIVE with hope and encourage others to “Do Something Huge” and join us on our 3-Day journey. We will NEVER give up!
