Please join us in congratulating our 2018 Seattle Milestone Award Winner; Nancy Schulman! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® Milestone Award is given at each event to a walker or crew member who has an outstanding history of participation in the Komen 3-Day. At the Seattle 3-Day camp show, we presented Nancy with this special honor.

We learned just how much the 3-Day means to Nancy when we spoke directly to her…

What was your inspiration to do your first 3-Day?

My sister, Susan, invited me to walk the 3-day with her in 2006. She had walked for the first time the previous year and had described the experience as ‘the world as she wished it could be every day’ – full of kindness, compassion and everyone looking out for each other. That really resonated. I had recently lost a close friend to this disease. Gail was 30 when diagnosed (her newborn wouldn’t nurse on the breast that had cancer). She had no family history of this disease and was 43 years young when she died.

So when my sister asked me to join her, I was motivated to walk in memory of my friend Gail, and in gratitude of my own health as my 50th birthday approached. From that very first year, my sisters, Ellie and Joni, along with my husband, Joel, and son, Logan, were incredible Walker Stalkers along the route – encouraging and cheering on the sea of pink.  Other family members join in each year when they can.  Team White Butterflies had begun.

What has brought you back year after year?

Seattle will be my 13th walk. Many things have kept me coming back to the pink bubble for the past 12 years, including: the caring community of walkers, crew, safety, medical, and staff – all working together to end breast cancers’ devastation; my son, who at the age of 6 challenged me to keep walking until he was old enough to walk with me (I did and 2018 will mark his third year as a walker); the diagnoses a few years ago of a cherished childhood friend and, last year, my beloved sister-in- law; the 4th/5th grade Junior White Butterflies our team has inspired; the butterfly wings that I wear at every walk, made by my sister Ellie, that carry the names of my donors and their loved ones; the firsthand knowledge that the money I help raise is making a difference – and the opportunity to see my fantastic husband in a pink wig and tutu!

What is the secret to your 3-Day fundraising success?

I don’t have any secrets to fundraising – I just ask. I ask anyone and everyone. And then I ask again. But that’s now – my first year I was incredibly intimidated by the idea of asking people for money. But to my surprise, I was able to raise more than the minimum.

My donors wanted to support finding a cure and shared stories about their families, friends or coworkers affected by breast cancer. So, the next year, I felt bolder and my reach widened. And, now I am admittedly greedy for this cause. It’s not personal if someone doesn’t make a donation. I also accept words of encouragement and a wave if they see me training around town. But if you don’t ask, it will always be a no.

IMG_1544

While I have been known to stand outside a grocery with a donation box, and post fliers around town, I do most of my fundraising by email. After my initial letter, usually in late spring, I send out short training updates about once a month, a little more frequently as the date approaches. The updates are key because with each one, my donations spike. We all need reminders. And, I follow up with genuinely grateful thank yous.  After the event, I send out a final thank you and recap.

I also wear my 3-Day shirts often and wear my White Butterflies team pin daily. If anyone comments on my pin or my shirt, they are rewarded with a smile and one of my 3Day business cards. By the way, the pins will be sold in Seattle for $10 along with cool knitted nipple hats made by a close friend. See, I told you I was greedy!

What is your best advice to anyone walking the 3-Day?

My best advice is to make the effort to meet and talk to your fellow 3-Dayers. Listen to their stories. Share yours. Laugh, cry, sing, dance. Have fun. It’s not a race, so enjoy the journey. It’s a journey of hope and inspiration through some pretty incredible cityscapes. You will make amazing friends along the way that I guarantee you will take with you when the 3-Day is over. Oh yeah, also train beforehand and stretch often on route. I change socks and underwear at lunch. (Doesn’t last long, but you sure feel refreshed!)

What is a fun fact about you?

I love to read, listen to audiobooks and narrated books on tape to the blind for over a decade. I love it!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned on the 3-Day?

A single step will bring you closer to your goal, so keep moving forward with perseverance and determination. You can’t always tell when your actions, kind word or helping hand will inspire or change a life.  So be there – show up – and spread kindness.  I can’t change the pain of those words, “You have breast cancer,”  but I know I am helping to make detection more accessible and treatment more tolerable and successful by raising money for, and walking in, the Susan G Komen 3-Day.  That is why I can’t walk away.

We learned more about why this event, and cause, is so important to her…

What was your inspiration to do your first 3-Day??

I wanted to celebrate my survivorship and see if a woman over 50 could walk 60 – now I know a woman over 70 can walk 60!

What has brought you back to the 3-Day year after year?

As soon as I walked my first 3 day, I realized this event was way more than about me – to watch everyone – survivors and non survivors be empowered is beyond incredible

What is the secret to your 3-Day fundraising success?

A great fundraising letter. I make it personal every year – because that’s what Breast Cancer is about. It’s about a Mom knowing she’ll never get to see her daughter walk down the aisle, it’s about a husband realizing that he will be the one taking his little girl shopping for her first bra, it’s about my friend Susan realizing that she just wasn’t going to get to see her granddaughter turn one on her own birthday and the stories abound – I try very hard in my letters to realize the human aspect of this disease. It’s the people behind this disease!

What is your best advice to anyone walking the 3-Day?

Realize that at some point ( or many) you will question your sanity for doing this walk. But every time I have thought oh man I am getting to old, I hurt too much to go on I come upon someone else who is really struggling – and I find myself focused on getting them to the next PIT STOP. You will never be walking alone!

What’s a fun fact about you?

I love to sail and ski – it’s my perfect get away. And at an early age I learned to hula!

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned on the 3-Day?

To encourage others to achieve something they weren’t sure that they could achieve – it’s the ultimate high 5 at the end of the day.

Coaches Liz and Gayla

The Seattle 3-Day is tomorrow, and guess who’s excited? We all are! But your coaches, Gayla and Liz, plus your amazing Crew Coordinator Libby and Event Planner Ann, have all been counting down the days to this weekend for a whole year. They can’t wait to welcome walkers, crew and 3-Day supporters of all kinds to Seattle! Before we kick off the weekend though, the Seattle team is here to share their favorite tips and advice, brag about each other and get you pumped for your 60-mile journey.

First, meet your coaches!

Libby explains that “This is the first time that all of us have worked together as a team, but you would never know it.  We really complement each other and make an amazing team!”

  • Coach Liz and Coach Gayla have been coaches together since 2014, and Liz has taken over all donation and website questions. Gayla praises her kindness, intelligence and restaurant picks!
  • Libby brings “lots of smiles and laughs,” according to Gayla, and “when it comes to all things crew, she knows her stuff!” Coach Gayla also loves that Libby is always ready to help with any task that needs doing.
  • Gayla herself is “fast moving, a fast talker, gets things done and loves life! The best coach to partner with!” according to Liz. Libby praises her contagious “passion and concern for every single participant.”
  • Ann and Libby have been a team for a while, and Libby says Ann is “funny, with an infectious laugh. She is calm and collected and just a joy to be around!” It helps that she is a wine expert and a true “dynamo,” according to Liz.

Libby sums it up best when she says, “Working with this team has been a welcome addition to my roster and I can’t wait to continue our work together!”

That work will culminate with the 3-Day this weekend, and there is a lot to be excited about…

  • Ann can’t wait to hear feedback on the new route for Day One, which she thinks will be a welcome change for walkers!
  • That day includes one of Liz’s favorite spots: Lunch at Downtown Bellevue Park, which is so pretty and calming.
  • Gayla loves “The Bra Boat that always putted along beside the I-90 Trail bridge – I hope they see us on the 520 Trail bridge this year!”
  • Woodland Rose Park is a team favorite all around.
  • And of course, we can’t forget Gasworks Park!
  • Right after Gasworks is downtown Seattle, and all the “sights, sounds and people watching at Pike Place Market.” This is another one of Coach Gayla’s favorites because “there’s nothing like that where I’m from in Dallas Cowboys country ?”
  • Overall, don’t miss a minute! Libby says she can’t pick a favorite because the route is just that good ? “I like it all! Seattle is such a beautiful place and we are seeing a lot of its beauty in our 60 miles.”

Coach Libby with participants

Aside from the route, the whole team is pumped to welcome the walkers and crew they have been speaking to and working with all year long. And don’t forget about the community support, too! Gayla can’t wait for 3-Dayers to see the private cheering stations and mobile cheer squad groups that will be supporting walkers throughout the 60-mile journey.

That’s what the 3-Day is about after all! “Camaraderie, community and healing” – per Coach Liz. All our coaching team is ready to bring together the 3-Day family on the West Coast and have a weekend of More Than Pink fun.

Coach Liz says, “Seattle has everything: water views, city, woods, hills. It is simply amazing!”

And so are your coaches…

“The Seattle market has some of the most veteran and loyal 3-Day coaches around,” promises Coach Gayla. “We live and love the 3-Day and with so many years of 3-Day participant and coaching experience, we hope that this year you will have as much fun as we will!”
