New England 2023 3-Day Event Recap

We kicked off the 2023 3-Day season in historic New England where members of the Pink Bubble gathered from all across the country between August 18-20 to participate in the momentous event! Together, the walkers and crew of the 2023 New England 3-Day raised a total of $2.1 million in the fight against breast cancer.

Day 1

New England 3-Dayers began their journey doing what they know best: adapting to change and overcoming obstacles! In the early hours of the morning, the skies opened up, resulting in a weather delay and route change. Despite these unforeseen challenges, our determined and courageous participants set out to paint the town pink! We began the day with an exciting Opening Ceremony, where walkers and crew gathered to ring in the first day with cheers and pins (so many pins!). Brothers James and Billy D. honored their late mother and all those who have lost their lives to breast cancer as they raised our Promise Flag for the crowd.

Inspired and well-rested, walkers embarked on the New England 3-Day for a 10-mile walk starting from the beautiful Marriott Copley Place. The sun mimicked the smiles of our walkers and crew, shining through the clouds as the Pink Bubble took to the streets of downtown Boston. Walkers brought the spirit to Brookline and Chestnut Hill where they enjoyed a delicious lunch before turning around toward home base. As walkers poured in, so did the rain! Showers briefly started back up as Day 1 wrapped up and our final walker returned to camp. After relaxing in the well-deserved Bank of America massage chairs, walkers enjoyed a delicious dinner. We even heard that a few committed walkers returned from the route only to head straight to the hotel fitness center to complete their 20 miles!

The Celebration of Champions soon commenced where Bank of America rewarded our Top Fundraisers, Milestone Award Winner, and Crew Impact Award Winners with donations up to $500 for their 2024 3-Day fundraising. New this year, Bank of America hosted a raffle where five New England 3-Day participants won $250 toward their 2024 fundraising efforts. Participants who have participated for 18+ years joined at the stage to cut the 3-Day’s 20th anniversary cake and celebrate this momentous event. With Day 1 complete, walkers headed to bed to rest their feet for tomorrow!

Day 2

The day started and ended with the sun high in the sky, shining proudly despite the challenges of the day before. Valiant walkers took to the streets of Boston at 7:45 a.m. as Ultimate Event Experience winner Alison R. and her team Cousins 4 A Cure: Twice as Nice led the way!

With spirits high, walkers set out to complete their next 20 miles through the streets of Boston. They snapped some photos in front of the iconic Fenway Park and walked the bubbly streets toward Sam Adams Brewery. The city was alive in Boston Commons, with smiles in every direction and tour guides decked out in historic garb. Walkers experienced other lively pit stops along the way thanks to our beloved crew who offered a glimpse into Beauty and the “Breast”, Pirates of the Caribbean and more!

No Saturday would be complete without a hearty serving of mac and cheese before heading into the Honor Ceremony. Members of the Youth Corps shared their stories as they lit candles in honor of their loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer. The rest of the crowd followed their lead, lighting the way to the remembrance room, a beautiful tribute showcasing the friends and family members behind the “why” of our Pink Bubble family. With hearts full and feet tired, walkers and crew rested up for the final day of the New England 3-Day.

Day 3

Today began with welcoming the 20-mile walkers to join us in the Pink Bubble during a delicious and nutritious breakfast to fuel up before heading out on the route. With the sun shining, walkers spent the day witnessing many of Boston’s historic sites including the Freedom Trail, USS Constitution, and Bunker Hill Monument to name a few. While on route, walkers were greeted at multiple pit stops by lively crew members adorned with Disney themed outfits and décor to keep spirits high. Our National Series Sponsor, XPO, even set up an incredible cheer station with bubbles and candy to inspire our walkers to push through toward the Finish Line Festival!

Walkers took their final strides into the Finish Line Festival where they picked up their New England 3-Day medal, victory t-shirts, and enjoyed a protein bar from Ready Nutrition. With tears of joy and smiles from ear-to-ear, walkers snapped some pictures at the Nature’s Bounty photobooth fully equipped with warrior wings and props… pink of course!

As the last walker made their way across the Mohawk Flooring pink carpet, they were cheered on by the hundreds of walkers, crew, staff, and supporters who were gathered together. When the final walker raised the flag, the Closing Ceremony began with a sea of sneakers in the air while our survivors and thrivers made their way toward the stage. Comradery, love, and support radiated from every single person in attendance as the New England 3-Day came to a close. We can’t wait to see you back in Boston in 2024!

As you embark on your 3-Day journey through the capital of Colorado, breathe in the fresh air and prepare to experience all that the Mile High City has to offer!

Day 1

The Denver 3-Day begins with a mix of urban and suburban experiences as we showcase the eastern side of the city. Your day starts at Coors Field, named after the Colorado-brewed beer company and home to the Colorado Rockies baseball team. Immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of America’s favorite pastime before strolling through the lively streets of Lower Downtown (LoDo). Located in the heart of the city, LoDo is one of Denver’s most dynamic areas, offering a mix of preserved historic buildings and modern developments.

Head toward the Denver Zoo, which prides itself in their conservation efforts including the preservation of endangered species and their habitats. From there, explore the Museum District, which houses the Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and other cultural institutions. There are countless opportunities to seek out art, history, and fascinating exhibits that will broaden your perspective, all while logging 20 miles!

Continue exploring the history of Denver as you head toward the Lowry District, one of the most revitalized areas of the country. Nestled within what was formerly known as the Lowry Air Force Base, this now quaint neighborhood used to be a prominent training center during World War II. As the day unfolds, pass through Governors Park before making your way toward the nearby Country Club Historic Neighborhood. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this prestigious community will transport you to the past with its elegant architecture dating back to the early 1900s. Finally, wrap up the first 20 miles in the bustling streets of Downtown Denver before returning to camp at the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center.

Day 2

Today you’ll venture beyond the energetic atmosphere of downtown, highlighting Denver’s most diverse and lively districts. You’ll take a short bus ride to the start of the route, where we will begin in Greenwood Village, an upscale suburban area adorned with beautiful parks and homes. Switch gears as you move toward the Denver Tech Center, a bustling corporate hub of technological innovation that encompasses a cluster of modern infrastructure. Nestled within is Cherry Creek State Park, a stunning green space that provides a refreshing contrast to the corporate atmosphere. Advance toward the University of Denver’s South Denver campus, known for its picturesque surroundings and prestigious academic programs.

Next, head down South Pearl Street, a lively area known for its historic charm and bustling boutiques. As you continue on, advance toward Washington Park, a beloved urban oasis with two lakes, lush gardens, and ample space for resting your feet as you continue your 3-Day journey. Take in the natural beauty it bestows as you stroll along the park’s scenic pathways. Take a detour to VooDoo Donuts, a local favorite, and indulge in their delectable and unique doughnut creations. Afterward, dive into the vibrant Santa Fe Arts District, where art galleries, studios, and vibrant murals line the streets, showcasing Denver’s thriving arts scene.

Snap a picture with one of Denver’s most recognizable art installations, known as the Big Blue Bear but officially titled “I See What You Mean.” Created by artist Lawrence Argent and installed in 2005, this whimsical 40-foot-tall sculpture is a beloved symbol of Denver, capturing the city’s artistic spirit and sense of playfulness. As your creative juices flow, be sure to capture a picture with the marvelous statue. Finish your trek in the Central Business District, Denver’s bustling commercial heart, before resting up at Camp for the last leg of your journey.

Day 3

On the final day, you’ll venture to Denver’s west side, uncovering hidden gems and picturesque landscapes. Start in the River North Arts District, affectionately known as RiNo, a vibrant neighborhood adorned with colorful street art and trendy breweries. Take your time to appreciate the creativity and energy that radiates from every corner!

Head toward the Ballpark District, a dynamic space just outside of Coors Field that blends industrial charm with modern development. Known for its nightlife, this area is sure to add a bit of pep in your step as you venture over the South Platte River toward Sloans Lake Park. Sprawling 177-acres, this park is home to a large manmade lake whose waters reflect the surrounding skyline and the majestic Rocky Mountains. Take your time to soak in the tranquility of this urban retreat just outside the hustle and bustle of the city. Head west to the City of Edgewater, a charming district nestled along the banks of Sloan’s Lake where you can enjoy the small-town atmosphere.

Continue your journey near Empower Field at Mile High, home to the Denver Broncos. This massive stadium sits at an elevation of approximately one mile above sea level, giving rise to its nickname Mile High Stadium. From here pass by the Auraria Campus, home to three prestigious educational institutions including the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the Community College of Denver. Vibrant like the city of Denver, the shared facilities, resources, and amenities of this unique cluster contribute to a diverse and enriching educational experience for the students who attend.

Breathe in the fresh air surrounding you and give yourself a pat on the back for the achievement you’ve just accomplished.

August Pink Bubble Story of the Month: Lindsey B.

In the fall of 2004, Lindsey B. was listening to the radio when an advertisement for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day captured her attention. Little did she know, that commercial would shape her life and ignite a passion to continue walking until the cures for breast cancer are found. As she reflects upon her remarkable story and the profound impact of the 3-Day, Lindsey is more determined than ever to make a difference.

In 2005, inspired by her Aunt Joan’s courageous battle with breast cancer, Lindsey decided to embark on the transformative journey to join the Pink Bubble and walk 60 miles in Kansas City. Despite balancing the challenges of starting graduate school while trying to fundraise for the 3-Day, the unwavering support from her family and friends pushed her forward. Overcome with emotion when she saw her Aunt Joan at the Closing Ceremony of her first walk, Lindsey knew right then that this would not be her last 3-Day. Since then, she has completed a total of 18 walks in various cities, including San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, and San Diego. This year, she eagerly anticipates participating in the Denver and San Diego 3-Day walks, continuing to contribute her efforts to the cause that has become an integral part of her life.

Lindsey currently acts as a member of the 3-Day Advisory Council which provides her with a platform to actively engage in brainstorming sessions, share insightful suggestions, and work collaboratively towards enhancing the 3-Day Series. She cherishes the opportunity to gather feedback from fellow walkers and crew members, particularly from first-time participants, as it allows her to advocate for their thoughts and ideas, fostering continuous improvement. Her hard work as part of the advisory council is a testament to her unwavering passion for this cause.

Since beginning her 3-Day journey 18 years ago, Lindsey has proudly raised over $130,000 for Susan G. Komen through the 3-Day, while her team, the Ta-Ta’s from KC, has collectively raised over $643,000. She finds solace and encouragement in being part of something greater than herself—the Pink Bubble. Lindsey is certain that the tireless efforts of Susan G. Komen and the grants they provide are instrumental in advancing research to ultimately bring an end to this disease. Additionally, she recognizes the significance of Komen’s support for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer through means such as financial assistance, a breast care helpline, patient navigation services, and screening and diagnostic programs for the uninsured and under-insured. These programs not only provide crucial support during uncertain times but also save lives.

Throughout her journey, Lindsey has received invaluable advice that has enhanced her experience with the 3-Day and is happy to pass it on to others. When it comes to training, she emphasizes the importance of walking in all the gear intended to be worn during the event. This allows her to identify any potential discomfort beforehand and make necessary adjustments before showtime. Furthermore, training in 3-Day apparel presents opportunities to raise awareness and solicit donations from individuals she encounters during her training walks. Spreading the word about her participation and the cause has led to remarkable levels of support, with some even expressing their interest in joining her on the 3-Day as walkers, crew members, or volunteers.

To those contemplating participating in the 3-Day, Lindsey extends a heartfelt invitation to embark on this life-changing experience. The 3-Day journey will undoubtedly leave a permanent mark on one’s life. Within the Pink Bubble, one will encounter a wide array of emotions—heartache and grief for those lost, worry and fear for those currently battling, and unbridled joy and elation for survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer. Above all, the connections formed with fellow walkers and crew members will create lasting bonds, leaving each participant with a network of over a thousand newfound friends.

Inspired by the memory of her brother-in-law’s mother, Mary, who battled both breast cancer and lung cancer, she has made a promise to continue walking and raising funds in the hope of finding the cures for breast cancer and all cancers. Carrying a bandanna adorned with the names of countless individuals affected by breast cancer, she walks those 60 miles as a tribute to their strength. She also walks for the future generations, including her own children, hoping to shield them from the fear of a breast cancer diagnosis.
