October Pink Bubble Story of the Month — Sandra G.

Sandra’s journey with the Susan G. Komen 3-Day began in the bustling streets of Manhattan, with a simple yet powerful step. While in remission from breast cancer, she was walking a 5K and found herself yearning to make a more profound impact. It was at this event when Sandra met a man whose wife was walking the same 5K while in the midst of her battle with breast cancer. Noting her own health and this woman’s bravery, Sandra began researching what more she could do, when she stumbled upon the 3-Day.

With a clean bill of health, Sandra registered to embark on her 3-Day adventure in 2020, which was unfortunately delayed due to COVID-19. The following year, she found herself with a Stage IV breast cancer diagnosis and ended up participating in her first walk while fighting the disease. For the past three years, her motivation to continue walking has been deeply rooted in the incredible community support and the substantial funds she and her team have raised. As she faces the challenges of Stage IV breast cancer, Sandra remains steadfast in her resolve to participate in the 3-Day, not only to raise funds for herself but to stand alongside others who share her experience. With each step, she strives to make a difference that extends beyond her own story, so that future generations don’t have to endure the tumultuous path she has endured. This year, she’s taking her mission to the Pacific coast as she walks in San Diego, continuing once again on the path of hope and healing.

Among the myriad of memories Sandra cherishes from her past 3-Day walks, one stands out as a testament to the remarkable connections forged during this saga. Two years ago, she found herself climbing a challenging hill, her determination slightly waning. However, a fellow walker approached her and struck up a conversation, asking about her story. Their interaction and shared purpose propelled her to conquer that hill, proving the incredible power of human connection in overcoming obstacles.

Sandra’s commitment to raising funds for breast cancer research is unwavering, fueled by her personal experiences. As she puts it, “no mother, daughter, son, husband, etc., should ever have to go through what I have been through,” referencing the years of chemotherapy, radiation, and emotional toll the battle has put on her and her loved ones. Her conviction is a driving force that motivates her to push her limits and inspires others to join her cause.

When asked about the best piece of advice she’d ever received regarding the 3-Day, Sandra emphasized the importance of taking care of one’s feet by wearing proper shoes. It’s’ a simple yet crucial reminder that speaks to the physical demands of the event (and a great opportunity to buy a cute pair of sneakers).

For those who are contemplating joining the 3-Day but have yet to take that leap, Sandra offers a message of hope and reassurance: “It is an inspiration and, in the end, not as hard as it seems. The cause is worth it.” Her words echo her own experience, showing that the path to making a difference is accessible to all who are willing to embark on it. While hard, she notes that walking 60 miles is not as hard as what she has been through in her fight against breast cancer. She wants to show people it can be done, and that walking is worth the effort to find the cures.

In closing, Sandra reflects on her extraordinary journey, one that began amidst challenges and uncertainty. Her inaugural walk, postponed due to the pandemic and undertaken after her Stage IV diagnosis, stands as a testament to her unwavering spirit and determination. With a sense of pride and hope, Sandra reveals that, in just three years, her efforts have contributed to raising around $100,000—a sum that serves as a beacon of hope for the future. As she continues her journey with the 3-Day, Sandra’s story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating the phenomenal impact that one person’s dedication and determination can have on a cause that touches so many lives.

September Pink Bubble Story of the Month: Rowena K.

Every 3-Day walker has a reason behind why they partake in this momentous event. Some walkers join the Pink Bubble to do some good in the world while others walk in honor of a loved one or their own survivorship. No matter the reason, every step has a story. Discover Rowena’s incredible testimony as she embarks on her fifth 3-Day in New England.

In 2009, Rowena observed the dedication and passion that her sister exuded while walking the 3-Day. Her sister’s courage and determination to raise awareness, gather donations, and complete the 60-mile mission left an indelible mark on her own spirit. However, it wasn’t until a profound personal loss struck her closest circle that Rowena’s call to walk grew even stronger. Her best friend, Laura, valiantly fought a four-year battle with cancer and tragically passed away at the tender age of 45. Witnessing her sister’s experience during the 3-Day and subsequently losing Laura ignited an unyielding resolve within Rowena to embark on this meaningful journey. Sadly, another heartbreaking loss came in 2019 when her sister-in-law, Beverly, lost her fight against breast cancer at the age of 57, leaving behind a loving husband and three beautiful young daughters.

With her heart heavy, Rowena took her first steps on the Susan G. Komen 3-Day in 2010. Year after year, she walked with renewed determination, participating in subsequent events in 2011, 2012, and 2021. For her fifth year in this empowering journey, Rowena walked in the 2023 New England 3-Day alongside her three nieces, Raney, Ryann, and Roxsan, to whom she will pass the torch. Walking with the next generation, she felt a deep sense of fulfillment, knowing that the legacy of compassion and determination will continue.

Reflecting on her previous experiences, she cherishes countless memories that have touched her soul. Each 3-Day that Rowena has participated in has brought her the gift of new friendships, profound stories of strength, and moments that she will hold close for a lifetime. She shared that the camaraderie and support she found amongst the fearless people she’s met along the way have forever changed her life, leaving an enduring imprint of gratitude within her heart.

When asked about the best advice she’s received regarding the 3-Day, Rowena highlights the significance of preparation, injury prevention, and staying hydrated. From training tips to walking techniques, she emphasizes the importance of setting goals and wearing proper shoes to ensure a comfortable and successful walk.

Additionally, Rowena feels strongly that the importance of raising funds for this cause cannot be overstated. She speaks to how her efforts have enabled the provision of vital education on breast health, free resources & screenings, and a compassionate hand to hold for those navigating the complexity of combatting breast cancer. Furthermore, these funds offer essential emergency assistance to underserved breast cancer patients facing financial crises while undergoing active treatment. By supporting this cause, Rowena feels that she is making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families who need it most.

To those who may be contemplating joining the 3-Day but have yet to take the leap, Rowena urges you not to hesitate. She assures that the 3-Day is an empowering way to show your support and that you will never regret making this commitment. The impact of participating in this event extends far beyond yourself as it has the power to transform countless lives. By participating in the 3-Day, you can become an agent of change, advocate for hope, and a beacon of support for those affected by breast cancer.

She described this year’s experience as unforgettable. She and her nieces had time to bond, laugh, cry, and celebrate as they walked together through the streets of Boston. Although this most likely marked Rowena’s final 3-Day as a walker, she looks forward to participating as a crew member, volunteer, or cheering supporter, because her commitment to this cause remains as strong as ever. She looks forward to passing the 3-Day Walker torch to her nieces in 2024 as she takes some time to let her body rest, heal and recover. Rowena truly embodies what it means to be a member of the Pink Bubble. Brimming with unwavering determination, we can all find the strength to stand beside those affected by breast cancer and raise our voices while we walk. Together, we can bring about a world free from the clutches of this devastating disease as we walk to find the cures for breast cancer.

Every walker has their story. What’s yours?

August Pink Bubble Story of the Month: Lindsey B.

In the fall of 2004, Lindsey B. was listening to the radio when an advertisement for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day captured her attention. Little did she know, that commercial would shape her life and ignite a passion to continue walking until the cures for breast cancer are found. As she reflects upon her remarkable story and the profound impact of the 3-Day, Lindsey is more determined than ever to make a difference.

In 2005, inspired by her Aunt Joan’s courageous battle with breast cancer, Lindsey decided to embark on the transformative journey to join the Pink Bubble and walk 60 miles in Kansas City. Despite balancing the challenges of starting graduate school while trying to fundraise for the 3-Day, the unwavering support from her family and friends pushed her forward. Overcome with emotion when she saw her Aunt Joan at the Closing Ceremony of her first walk, Lindsey knew right then that this would not be her last 3-Day. Since then, she has completed a total of 18 walks in various cities, including San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, and San Diego. This year, she eagerly anticipates participating in the Denver and San Diego 3-Day walks, continuing to contribute her efforts to the cause that has become an integral part of her life.

Lindsey currently acts as a member of the 3-Day Advisory Council which provides her with a platform to actively engage in brainstorming sessions, share insightful suggestions, and work collaboratively towards enhancing the 3-Day Series. She cherishes the opportunity to gather feedback from fellow walkers and crew members, particularly from first-time participants, as it allows her to advocate for their thoughts and ideas, fostering continuous improvement. Her hard work as part of the advisory council is a testament to her unwavering passion for this cause.

Since beginning her 3-Day journey 18 years ago, Lindsey has proudly raised over $130,000 for Susan G. Komen through the 3-Day, while her team, the Ta-Ta’s from KC, has collectively raised over $643,000. She finds solace and encouragement in being part of something greater than herself—the Pink Bubble. Lindsey is certain that the tireless efforts of Susan G. Komen and the grants they provide are instrumental in advancing research to ultimately bring an end to this disease. Additionally, she recognizes the significance of Komen’s support for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer through means such as financial assistance, a breast care helpline, patient navigation services, and screening and diagnostic programs for the uninsured and under-insured. These programs not only provide crucial support during uncertain times but also save lives.

Throughout her journey, Lindsey has received invaluable advice that has enhanced her experience with the 3-Day and is happy to pass it on to others. When it comes to training, she emphasizes the importance of walking in all the gear intended to be worn during the event. This allows her to identify any potential discomfort beforehand and make necessary adjustments before showtime. Furthermore, training in 3-Day apparel presents opportunities to raise awareness and solicit donations from individuals she encounters during her training walks. Spreading the word about her participation and the cause has led to remarkable levels of support, with some even expressing their interest in joining her on the 3-Day as walkers, crew members, or volunteers.

To those contemplating participating in the 3-Day, Lindsey extends a heartfelt invitation to embark on this life-changing experience. The 3-Day journey will undoubtedly leave a permanent mark on one’s life. Within the Pink Bubble, one will encounter a wide array of emotions—heartache and grief for those lost, worry and fear for those currently battling, and unbridled joy and elation for survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer. Above all, the connections formed with fellow walkers and crew members will create lasting bonds, leaving each participant with a network of over a thousand newfound friends.

Inspired by the memory of her brother-in-law’s mother, Mary, who battled both breast cancer and lung cancer, she has made a promise to continue walking and raising funds in the hope of finding the cures for breast cancer and all cancers. Carrying a bandanna adorned with the names of countless individuals affected by breast cancer, she walks those 60 miles as a tribute to their strength. She also walks for the future generations, including her own children, hoping to shield them from the fear of a breast cancer diagnosis.
