September Pink Bubble Story of the Month: Vivian O.

In 2005, Vivian O.’s beloved Mom lost her fight with breast cancer. In her grief, Vivian discovered the power of the Suan G. Komen 3-Day®. Her journey with the Komen 3-Day started in Tampa Bay and has continued for more than 30 events since 2006. In the last 18 years, she has traveled to various cities, walked many ‘Komen miles,’ worked on different crews, met hundreds of people, camped out, used port-a-potties, and found a safe place amidst all the pink to heal and grow.

“Twenty months. That was all the time my mom had after her diagnosis before the cancer took her. I was left with emotions and feelings I didn’t know what to do with. When I saw an advertisement for the Tampa Bay 3-Day, I decided to join as a crew member. That one decision helped in a way I will forever be grateful for because it gave me a purpose, a way to honor my mother, and a way to help in the fight against breast cancer. So, what does the 3-Day® mean to me? It means community, it means belonging, it means commitment. It means cheering the last walker into camp, 3-Day macaroni and cheese, route arrows, and seas of pink. However, the most important thing the 3-Day gives me is an outlet to process my grief with people that understand my loss in a way others do not. Cancer takes a toll on families and grieving the loss of someone important is hard and lonely, but the 3-Day taught me it doesn’t have to be done alone and there are moments when all you can do is walk. So, if you find yourself in a similar situation, my advice is to find yourself a 3-Day and start walking! 

“Over the years, I have been both a walker and a crew member and have enjoyed both experiences immensely. As a crew member, I have been on different road crews, including route safety (motorcycle), route hydration, sweep and for the last several years, I have focused on route marking, which is the crew that lays down the route the walkers will take each day. There is so much I enjoy about it—the camaraderie, talking with and learning about each person, and hearing everyone’s stories as to why they crew. I enjoy being part of the walk’s backbone because all the crew teams together make up the foundation of any 3-Day. I love knowing that I’m one person amongst many that provide services and support to assist the walkers in being able to do their part in walking, fundraising, and helping Komen be a leader in cancer research and medical advancements. I enjoy the physical nature of crewing, the hard work, and having a singular goal for the duration of the 3-Day. I enjoy the energy that is put out by the Pink Bubble, with the traditions and structures that are so familiar and dear to me after so many years and events. And with each mile I walk, each dollar I fundraise, and each time I crew, I’m doing something, no matter how small, to help in the fight against breast cancer and bringing critical services to people that need it. In doing so, I honor my mom and that is what I’m most proud of. 

“My mom was from Spain, and so I will leave you with a saying she used to tell my sisters and I all the time, and considering what the 3-Day does, I felt it was appropriate. ‘Pisa con el pie derecho’ which translates to ‘step with your right (best) foot forward.’

Denver 3-Day Route Preview 2024

Nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is a bustling metropolis with a unique mix of natural beauty and urban energy. Situated at an elevation of 5,280 feet above sea level, the Mile High City offers stunning views of the Rockies and enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year. Its historic Old West roots combined with its modern, forward-thinking spirit, have created a community that celebrates creativity, innovation, and the outdoors. As you embark on your 20-, 40-, or 60-mile walk through Denver for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day®, you’ll experience iconic landmarks, cultural sites, and green spaces. Whether you’re a Colorado native or visiting for the first time, this walk will give you a fresh perspective on the Mile High City. 

Day 1 

After a touching Opening Ceremony at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, you’ll set out on your journey in the crisp morning air as the city is just beginning to stir. You’ll pass by the Big Blue Bear, an iconic symbol of Denver’s playful spirit before heading toward Coors Field, where you’ll feel the energy of one of the city’s most beloved sports venues, even if the stands are empty. Continuing, you’ll get a glimpse of the Fillmore Auditorium and the Denver Turnverein Dance Center, two spots that capture the cultural heartbeat of the city. Both locations have rich histories and are well-loved by the community, making them perfect places to pause and soak in the local vibe. 

As you approach the Smith Mansion & Carriage House, you’ll be transported to another era. This historic building stands as a reminder of Denver’s storied past, contrasting with the modernity of the city around it. From there, it’s a short walk toward the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, where the wonders of the natural world meet cutting-edge technology. Your march continues through residential neighborhoods, giving you a glimpse of everyday life in Denver. 

To wrap up your first 20 miles, you’ll stroll through some of Denver’s most picturesque areas, including James N. Manley Park and the stately Governor’s Residence at the Boettcher Mansion which offer serene, tree-lined paths. With just a few miles to go, witness the Governor’s Residence at the Boettcher Mansion, built in 1908 in a combination of Georgian Revival and Colonial Revival architectural styles. Snap a picture in Civic Center Park which features various sculptures, the Pioneer Monument Fountain, and the iconic Greek amphitheater. Return to camp to recharge and refuel for the evening with some delicious food and Bank of America massage chairs! To wrap up the evening, we’ll celebrate our top fundraisers and randomly select five participants to win $250 toward their 2025 3-Day fundraising and a swag bag courtesy of Bank of America at our Celebration of Champions. 

Day 2 

After fueling up with a hearty breakfast, Day 2 will begin with a bus ride to Boulder for a never-before-seen Komen 3-Day route! Just 25 miles northwest of camp, Boulder has more than 45,000 acres of protected land, making it a leader in sustainability and a model for other cities.  

Your journey begins at East Boulder Park, a tranquil spot surrounded by lush greenery and scenic views providing the perfect ambiance to ease into your day. Then you’ll make your way towards the 29th Street Shops, a lively area where you’ll find a mix of retail stores, cafes, and local businesses. Continuing on, you’ll reach Growing Gardens, a non-profit urban farm that showcases Boulder’s commitment to sustainability and community agriculture. This beautiful space, filled with blooming flowers and fresh produce, is a perfect place to pause and take in the sights and scents of the garden. 

As you progress towards Eben G. Fine Park, you’ll notice the landscape transitioning from urban to more natural surroundings. Located at the base of Boulder Canyon, this park is a gateway to outdoor adventures, offering access to trails, picnic areas, and the soothing sounds of Boulder Creek, a highlight of the route. The creek’s clear, rushing waters and tree-lined banks offer a refreshing and serene experience, making it a perfect photo opportunity. As you continue toward the vibrant heart of Boulder, you’ll find yourself downtown and at the Pearl Street Mall, both of which are must-visits in this stunning city!

You’ll find yourself passing the Dushanbe Teahouse, a unique and ornate building gifted to Boulder by its sister city in Tajikistan. This cultural gem is a perfect spot to admire the intricate artwork and perhaps enjoy a cup of tea if you’re feeling a bit posh! Close by, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art offers a glimpse into the city’s thriving art scene, with rotating exhibits that challenge and inspire. As your walk continues, you’ll pass through the University of Colorado Boulder campus, where Mackey Auditorium and Old Main stand as testaments to the university’s long history and academic excellence. Finally, your trek then leads back towards East Boulder Park, where your route began, as you climb aboard a 3-Day® bus to return to camp for a touching Honor Ceremony. 

Day 3 

As your final day begins, you’ll find yourself walking through the heart of downtown Denver. You’ll soon be greeted next by the vibrant energy of the RiNo (River North) Arts District, an eclectic neighborhood known for its thriving art scene, creative energy, and unique blend of industrial history with modern culture. Located just north of downtown Denver, RiNo has transformed over the years from a gritty warehouse district into one of the city’s most dynamic areas, attracting artists, entrepreneurs, and visitors alike. 

Continuing, you’ll head towards the Denver Millennium Bridge, a striking piece of architecture that offers panoramic views of the city’s skyline. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the confluence of the Platte River and Cherry Creek, a scenic spot where two of Denver’s waterways meet. It’s a tranquil oasis in the middle of the city, perfect for a brief pause to enjoy the natural beauty that envelops the landscape. Nearby, you’ll have the chance to see some exciting exhibits at the Downtown Aquarium such as tigers, koi, river otters, and various birds that are visible from outside. Grab a snack at the Farmer’s Market at Highlands Square before continuing toward Sloans Lake, where The USS Grayling Memorial is a reminder of the city’s connection to its military history. 

As you near the end of your voyage you’ll pass by Gateway Plaza before exploring the Sports Walk at Mile High Stadium, a must-see for any sports fan. As you complete the Denver 3-Day, wrap up the 60-mile journey at the Finish Line Festival on Tivoli Quad and take in the mountain landscape one last time. Breathe in the fresh air surrounding you and celebrate your momentous achievement both personally and in the fight against breast cancer.

Blister Care 101

Walking the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® is an incredibly rewarding experience, from raising funds for the fight against breast cancer to pushing your limits beyond what you ever thought was possible. However, when training and walking 60 miles, it’s not uncommon to experience uncomfortable blistering. When your skin repeatedly rubs against your shoes or socks, it can cause the top layers of skin to separate, creating a space that fills with fluid. Common signs of an impending blister include redness, heat, and a burning sensation in the affected area. Proper prevention and care are essential to keep your feet in top condition so you can take each step with confidence. 

Here’s how you can protect yourself from blisters and manage them effectively if they do occur. 

PREVENTING BLISTERS: STEPS TO KEEP YOUR FEET SAFE 

CHOOSE THE RIGHT FOOTWEAR 

  • A good fit minimizes friction, so ensure your shoes are neither too tight nor too loose. When trying on new shoes, wear the same type of socks you plan to wear on the Komen 3-Day. 
  • Gradually break in your shoes by wearing them for shorter training walks and throughout your everyday life. 
  • Opt for shoes and socks with minimal seams in the areas most prone to blisters, such as the heels and toes. 

WEAR MOISTURE-WICKING SOCKS 

  • Choose socks made from synthetic materials that wick moisture away from your skin. Avoid cotton, which retains moisture and increases friction. 
  • Consider wearing two layers of socks, with the inner sock acting as a buffer to reduce friction. 

KEEP YOUR FEET DRY 

  • Apply foot powder or antiperspirant to reduce moisture and friction. 
  • If your socks get wet from sweat or rain, change them as soon as possible to prevent prolonged exposure to moisture. 

USE PROTECTIVE BARRIERS 

  • Apply blister prevention balms or petroleum jelly to areas prone to friction. This creates a slick surface that reduces rubbing. 
  • Preemptively apply Moleskin or Blister Bandages to high-risk areas such as your heels and toes before embarking on long walks. 

CARING FOR BLISTERS: TREATMENT AND RECOVERY 

Even with the best preventive measures, blisters can still occur. On the 3-Day®, our Medical Crew is happy to help you at pit stops and at camp, but knowing how to treat them is crucial for minimizing pain and preventing infection. 

DO NOT POP BLISTERS 

  • If the blister is small and not too painful, it’s best to leave it intact, since the fluid inside serves as a protective cushion and helps prevent infection. 

IF YOU MUST DRAIN A BLISTER 

  • Use a sterilized needle (you can sterilize it with alcohol or by heating it) to puncture the blister at the edge. 
  • Drain it carefully by gently pressing out the fluid while leaving the overlying skin intact to protect the underlying tissue. 
  • Apply an antibiotic ointment and cover the blister with a sterile bandage or gauze to protect it from infection. 

KEEP THE AREA CLEAN 

  • Frequently and gently clean the blistered area with mild soap and water before reapplying ointment and a fresh bandage. 
  • Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, swelling, or pus. If any of these occur, seek medical attention promptly. 

REST AND PROTECT 

  • When training, take a break for a few days to allow your blister(s) to heal before continuing. 
  • While on the route, consider taking a sweep van to the next location for proper care. If you choose to continue, try to adjust your stride or posture to reduce pressure on the affected area. 
  • Apply extra padding around the blister to relieve pressure and allow it to heal more quickly. 

While blisters are a common challenge for 3-Dayers, with proper preparation and care, they can be prevented or managed effectively. By choosing the right footwear, keeping your feet dry, and taking steps to reduce friction, you can enjoy your stride through the Pink Bubble in style without the discomfort of blisters. And if they do happen, knowing how to treat them properly will ensure a swift recovery, keeping you on track for your next adventure.
